In popular music, indie music, often abbreviated as indie (from independent) is a term originally used to describe genres, scenes, subcultures, styles and other cultural attributes in music, characterized by their independence from major commercial record labels and their autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording, publishing and live performing. The term has since become increasingly popular and is now often used to describe anything in music that is characterized by its perceived indepency from mainstream or pop culture as a whole. As such, it can be seen as a synonym for alternative music.
