Portrait imaginaire de Sade[1] (1938, English: Imaginary Portrait of the Marquis de Sade) is a painting by Man Ray showing the face of the Marquis de Sade with the Bastille as background. Sade's face appears translucent with bricks shining through. There are at least two versions of this painting, one with the Bastille intact, and one with the Bastille burning (the Menil Collection, Houston). The one with the burning Bastille has the famous excerpt from Sade's will, "afin que ... les traces de ma tombe disparaissent de dessus la surface de la terre, comme je me flatte que ma mémoire s'effacera de l'esprit des hommes ...", as caption. There is also a real bust of the image[2].
