Hermaphrodite (d'Agoty)[1][2] is a color print by the French medical illustrator Jacques Fabien Gautier d'Agoty produced in 1749. It shows similarities of framing and position to Courbet's The Origin of the World.
- "Dans ce premier périodique scientifique publié en France : Observations sur l’histoire naturelle, sur la physique et sur la peinture,Paris Delaguerre 1752-1755, une partie consacrée à l'anatomie se penche sur une étude du "Démonstrateur en chirurgie en Anatomie & chirurgien au jardin du Roi", le sieur Mertrud, consacrée à une(dans ce texte) hermaphrodite. Depuis l'antiquité, jusqu'à une période récente, les hermaphrodites étaient considérés comme des monstres. La planche gravée et colorée par le "sieur Gautier" a été réalisée en 1749. Chose troublante, plus d'un siècle avant "L'Origine du Monde"de Courbet, la position, le cadrage sont les mêmes. Seul un détail change !"--[3]
