"Twee van de belangrijkste Nederlandse schrijvers van de twintigste eeuw, Willem Frederik Hermans en Gerard Reve, schreven elkaar in de jaren veertig en vijftigvele openhartige brieven. Hun correspondentie staat aanvankelijk in het teken van groeiend literair zelfvertrouwen, gevoelens van miskenning en vooral een grondige afkeer van het artistieke klimaat in het naoorlogse Nederland. De aanstormende talenten hadden grote waardering voor elkaars werk en ontwikkelden zelfs plannen voor een gezamenlijke roman. In 1959 kwam het tot een abrupte breuk.... '
