je suis venu trop tard dans un monde trop vieux (English: I came too late into a world too old) is a line of poetry from "Rolla" by Alfred de Musset.

The line was cited by critic Paul Bourget in "Psychologie contemporaine; Notes et Portraits: Charles Baudelaire" to denote a sentiment found in all authors of the decadent movement.

Si une nuance très spéciale d'amour, si une nouvelle façon d'interpréter le pessimisme font déjà de la tête de Baudelaire une curiosité psychologique d'un ordre rare, ce qui lui donne une place à part dans la littérature de notre époque, c'est qu'il a mer­veilleusement compris et presque héroïquement exagéré cette spécialité et cette nouveauté. Il s'est rendu compte qu'il arrivait tard dans une civilisation vieillissante, et, au lieu de déplorer cette arrivée tardive, comme La Bruyère et comme Musset, il s'en est réjoui, j'allais dire honoré. Il était un homme de déca­dence, et il s'est fait un théoricien de décadence. C'est peut-être là le trait le plus inquiétant de cette inquiétante figure. C'est peut-être celui qui exerce la plus troublante séduction sur une âme contemporaine.

He has realized that he arrived late in an aging civilization. And instead of deploring this tardy arrival, like La Bruyère and Musset, he would have been delighted - I almost said honored by it. He was a man for times of decadence, and he turned himself into a theoretician of decadence. This may well be the most disquieting trait of this disquieting figure, and the one most disturbingly seductive to a contemporary soul.

Elsewhere Bourget speaks of "une mortelle fatigue de vivre, une morne perception de la vanité de tout effort" (English: "a mortal sense of fatigue in face of life, a dismal perception of the vanity of all effort").

Citing Jean de La Bruyère is also meaningful here who stated "all has been said" in his Characters (17th century) and Jules Laforgue, who wrote the poem "Trop tard".

"J'ai tout lu, tout vu, tout bu," the song by French singer Jacques Dutronc, is a contemporary interpretation of this dictum.
