Has the West Lost It
From The Art and Popular Culture Encyclopedia
"The West should engage in deep reflection on what it has done to the Islamic world for the past two centuries." --Has the West Lost It? A Provocation "Do you know that between 1824 and 1994 your country carried out 73 invasions in countries of Latin America? The victims were Puerto Rico, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Haiti, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, the Virgin Islands, El Salvador, Guatemala and Grenada. [...] What does fear feel like? How does it feel, Yank, knowing that on September 11th the long war finally reached your home?" --"Gabriel García Márquez: "How does it feel?" (hoax)" "A less adversarial relationship between the West and the Rest will help to dispel the clouds of pessimism that now envelop Western societies." |

Has the West Lost It? A Provocation (2018) is a short book by Kishore Mahbubani. Mahbubani advocates a minimum of Western interventionism after what he sees as a period of Western arrogance in which the west humiliated Muslims and Russia. The book centers on the premise that economic growth will make everyone happier (except for the west which can no longer grow). The book fails to mention the coming ecocalypse and does not seem to mind the violations of human rights. The book cites the ""How does it feel?" Gabriel García Márquez hoax without acknowledging that it is a hoax.

Europe needs to separate its fate from that of the United States
The United States and Europe no long share the same challenges. The United States needs to mind its relationship with China (see Chimerica) and Europe needs to tackle the Middle East and African immigration.
Functional governance
Kishore seems to favor "functional governance" over true democracy:
- "Functional governance is good enough to improve the lives of people and lift living standards."
In doing so, he seems not to care very much about human rights. One example is his criticism of Europe for not allowing Turkey into the European Union since they asked to do so in 1987, thus, according to Mahbubani, humiliating the Turks.
