100 Masterpieces was a TV series created by Edwin Mullins for BBC in 1980, where he also acted as moderator. He chose 20 theme groups like war, adoration, language of color, hunt, bathing, etc., picking five paintings from each. The collection reaches from 12th century China through 1950s with an emphasis on European paintings. He deliberately avoided the greatest paintings, such as Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa or John Constable's The Haywain. The sequel is available on VHS or on DVD.

1980-1994 WDR produced a series called "1000 Meisterwerke" which was broadcast in Germany.

The English or German sequel was broadcast in USA, England, Netherlands, South Africa, Austria, Scandinavia and Japan.
