"Gay science" is an expression derived from the Provençal phrase gai saber, the technical skill required for poetry writing.

It is most commonly known through the title of Nietzsche's book The Gay Science.

Walter Kaufmann references The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (1955) that lists "The gay science (=Pr[ovençal] gai saber): the art of poetry."
