The "First Annual Exhibition" of the Society of Independent Artists was held at the Grand Central Palace, New York, from April 10 to May 6, 1917. It included more than 2,000 art works, which the catalog indicates were hung in alphabetical order by the artist's last name. Although there were entries from all over the world, they were predominantly by artists of New York and other East Coast cities.

The catalog said: "No jury, no prizes" and cites Ingres's words "A jury, whatever be the means adopted for its formation, will always work badly. The need of our time is for unlimited admission."

Marcel Duchamp resigned as a director after the Society refused to include in the exhibition his Fountain — a readymade in the form of a urinal and signed with the pseudonym "R. Mutt." The incident pointed out that the exhibition was not truly open.

Foreword

IN OPENING the first annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, the Directors present the following brief statement^ quoted from its preliminary announcement of January, 1917, of the purposes for which the Society was organized:

The Society of Independent Artists has been incorporated under the laws of New York for the purpose of holding exhibi- tions in which all artists may participate independently of the decisions of juries. The need for such a society must be clear to all who are familiar with the conditions of the art-world. On one hand we have the frank statement of the established art societies that they cannot exhibit all the deserving work submitted to them because of lack of space. On the other hand, such exhibi- tions as take place at private galleries must, by their nature, be formed from the ranks of artists who are already more or less known; moreover, no one exhibition at present gives an idea of contemporary American art in its ensemble, or permits comparisons of the various directions it is taking, but shows only the work of one man or a homogeneous group of men. The great need, then, is for an exhibition, to be held a given period each year, where artists of all schools can exhibit together — certain that whatever they send will be hung and that all will have an equal opportunity. For the public, this exhibition will make it possible to form an idea of the state of contemporary art. No such survey could be obtained from a dozen visits to the exhibitions of former years, when none could claim to be thoroughly representative.

The program of the Society of Independent Artists, which is practically self-explanatory, has been taken over from the Societe des Artistes Independants of Paris. The latter Society, whose salon is the second oldest in France, has done more for the advance of French art than any other institution of its period. A consid- erable number of the most prominent artists of the present gen- eration and the preceding one established tlieir reputation at its annual exhibitions. It has more members, sells more works and is on a firmer financial basis than any other of the four great salons.

The reason for this success is to be found in the principle adopted at its founding in 1884 and never changed: "No jury, no prizes."

The first clause of this watchword was foreshadowed by the great Ingres when he said in his report to tlie Commission Perma- nente des Beaux- Arts, over sixty years ago: "A jury, whatever be the means adopted for its formation, will always work badly. The need of our time is for unlimited admission [to the Salon]. ... I consider unjust and immoral any restriction tending to prevent a man from living from the product of his work." The "no jury" system, then, ensures a chance to exhibit to artists of every school, and, as a matter of fact, every school is represented at this salon, from the most conservative to the most radical. In the case of the present Society the same result is assured by the presence among the founders of the Society of distinguished artists who represent every important tendency in contemporary art and who will par- ticipate in its exhibitions.

The second principle of "no prizes" received its best explana- tion and endorsement when M. Renoir said in an interview, five years ago, that the thing needed for the placing of artists pn an equal footing before the public, their final judge, was the abolition of the artificial distinctions of the prize system.

A third and important measure for obtaining equality of op- portunity for all exhibitors has been adopted by the directors of the Society who govern its proceedings for this year. It consists in hanging all works in alphabetical order, thus relieving the hang- ing committee of the difficulties raised by their personal judgments as to the merits of the exhibits.

There are no requirements for admission to the Society save the acceptance of its principles and the payment of the initiation fee of one dollar and the annual dues of five dollars. All exhibitors are thus members and all have a vote for the directors and on the decisions made by the Society at its annual meetings. The principle of "no jury — no prizes," precluding special advantages to any individual, any group or any tendency, the offices of the body (presidency, secretaryship, etc.) are purely administrative. The several matters briefly stated above have been fixed by the By-Laws, copies of which will be sent to members upon request for them to the Secretary.

The response to this announcement has proved the need of a society which enables all artists, irrespective of school or group,

to exhibit their works in America with complete freedom. Already, after only a few months of existence, the Society has enrolled a membership of more llian twelve hundred, gathered from all parts of America, Europe and Asia; and the indications are that the number of members will be more than doubled next year.

The governing principle of the Society, which permits a mem- ber to exhibit whatever he wishes on the payment of nominal dues, is applied to the catalogue of the Exhibition, in which each exhibitor has the right to buy the space for one illustration. The illustra- tions are thus decided upon by no process of selection, but by the spontaneous desire of the exhibitors themselves.

The arrangement of all the exhibits in alphabetical order, regardless of manner or medium, is followed with a view to freeing the individual exhibit from the control of the merely personal judgments which are inevitably the basis of any system of grouping.

Conditions of time and the difficulties always attendant on the organization of a great society have been the only factors that have deterred the Directors from including as fully as they would wish all the arts together in the Society's first exhibition.. A beginning is made by the presentations of literature, music, acting, the cinematograph, etc., which are scheduled for the Lecture Hall on the mezzanine floor. It is the purpose of the Society to become a common ground for the free expression of all the arts.

AMAJORITY of the works exhibited are for sale. The prices will be found on the number cards of the exhibits^ except in cases where the word "Desk** replaces the price. For the prices of works not given on the cards^ intending purchasers may consult the officials and attendants of the exhibition^ or the sales agent at the catalogue desk. The members of the Society have been requested to state the lowest prices they will accept for their exhibits; the Directors therefore decline to con- sider or transmit any proposals for sales at prices other than those stated.

To COMPLEMENT the exhibition of the plastic arts^ the Society invites its visitors to attend a series of presentations of other forms of art (music, literature, acting, the cinematograph, etc.), to be given on special afternoons in the Lecture Room on the Mezzanine Floor. Admission is free to all visitors at the exhibition. A program of the day's feature will be posted on the bulletin board near the main entrance of the exhibition and will be further announced in the daily press.

The Society thanks for their co-operation:

The President and Staff of the Grand Central Palace.

Mr. M. Worth Colwell, Press Representative of the Society.

Mr. William Edwin Rudge, Printer of the Catalogue.

The McConnell Press, Inc., Printers of the announcements, etc.

The Edison Electric Company, for the installation of tea-room.

Pach Brothers, Photographers of the Exhibition.

Mr. Montague Lee, of the Sterling Engraving Co., under whose supervision all the half-tone plates of the illustrated catalogue were made.
