La grande odalisque is a painting by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres painted in 1814 and sent to the Paris Salon of 1819. It was met with hostility by the critics, who ridiculed its radically attenuated modeling as well as Ingres's habitual anatomical distortions of the female nude. Ingres' contemporaries considered the work to signify Ingres' break from Neoclassicism, indicating a shift toward exotic Romanticism.
