The Latin phrase Ex ungue leonem , literally translated, means "the lion [recognizes itself] from the claw."

The bully is recognized by his robberies; or, in a good sense, from a few lines we recognize the hand of a great artist, as was used by Johann Bernoulli who recognized Isaac Newton anonymous mathematical solution to one of his problems.

It has a certain affinity with the evangelical saying: "From the fruit the tree is known". See Mt 7, 15-20
