Europeana is the European digital library with digitized paintings, books, films and archives. The project was publicly launched on November 20, 2008.

The prototype contained around two million digital items, all of them already in the public domain. More than half the initial content was supplied by France, 10 percent by Britain, 1.4 percent from Spain, and 1 percent from Germany. The project aims to have 10 million works by 2010, when Europeana is due to be fully operational.

The director of the Europeana project is Jill Cousins.
