Erotic peplums are a subgenre of erotic cinema and of the peplum film. Perhaps inspired by the ancient sketch of amorality in Fellini's Satyricon (1969), the wave of successful erotic films of the 1970s provides a kind of resurrection: the Roman bacchanalia are the heart of these films and Caligula is often staged. Messalina Messalina! by Sergio Corbucci is released in 1977 and in 1979, the Cannes festival is presented with Caligula by Tinto Brass. Many erotic peplums were produced until the 1980s and Ancient Rome remains a popular setting for erotic and pornographic films.
