She was born the daughter of John Malet of Enmore Castle and Unton Hawley. John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester became infatuated with Elizabeth Malet and asked for her hand in marriage. She refused to marry the earl, and he attempted to abduct her on 26 May, 1665. She later forgave him and they were married on 29 January, 1667.
