The Duke and Duchess of Windsor are Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and his wife, an American divorcée, Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. They were controversial in their time, not in the least because a British monarch and chosen to abdicate and marry and American divorced woman, but also because they were suspected of Nazi sympathies. President Roosevelt personally ordered covert surveillance on them during the second world war after receiving intelligence that the duchess had been passing secrets to a top Nazi with whom she was alleged to have had a tempestuous affair.

They were also art lovers, having their photograph taken by Philippe Halsman and who bought work from the Spanish surrealist José Manuel Capuletti.
