In a context of literary and art theory, the term disturbing denotes a sensibility that inspires disgust, horror, repugnance, repulsion because it touches upon grotesque, macabre, offensive, taboo or uncanny subject matter.

Etymology

From Anglo-Norman distourber, from Old French destorber, from Latin disturbare, intensifying for turbare (“to throw into disorder”).
