The Dark Triad of personalities is a group of three personality traits: narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

Studies of the Dark Triad

One perspective of the Dark Triad is that it consists of three related yet independent constructs, that the three traits share variance with one another, and that the three traits sometimes share variance with other traits like the Big Five personality traits.

An alternative perspective posits that the three are all measuring the same underlying social strategy. Moreover, this perspective holds that personality traits are reflections of underlying, evolved social strategies. Selection pressures may not act on every single variable of interest and thus we should not expect a high degree of consistency across the three traits when just anything is measured. When measuring adaptive tasks like mating, there is marked consistency across the three traits (Jonason, Li, Webster, & Schmitt, 2009).
