The term "cutting" is also sometimes used by scratch DJs to refer to the release scratch, where a sound effect is played on beat by releasing the record at the beginning of the sound.
Also a term from the days of vinyl records. To "cut a record" was to record a record because the grooves in the original acetate were physically cut according to the music.
