Rudolf Carnap (May 18, 1891 – September 14, 1970) was a German-born philosopher who was active in Europe before 1935 and in the United States thereafter. He was a major member of the Vienna Circle and an advocate of logical positivism.
Criticism of Heidegger
"Elimination of Metaphysics through Logical Analysis of Language" is a polemical paper by Rudolf Carnap, an illustration of some important differences between "analytic" and "continental" styles of philosophy. It argues that Martin Heidegger's lecture "What Is Metaphysics?" violates logical syntax to create nonsensical pseudo-statements (Scheinsätze). Moreover, Carnap claimed that many German metaphysicians of the era were similar to Heidegger in writing statements that were not merely false, but devoid of any meaning.
