Background

In April 2008, Pitchfork Media and The Torontoist published stories about Crystal Castles' use of a Trevor Brown painting, depicting a black-eyed Madonna, without permission. The band began using the image after finding it on an "old flyer, without credit". The manager of Crystal Castles, Mikey Apples said, "it was their hope that the artist might reveal themselves and make contact with the band." The image has been used on Crystal Castles t-shirts and it was used as the cover for a the band's debut album, released by Last Gang Records as the "banned cover" version. Brown contacted band member Alice Glass through email in 2006, as he wanted to come to agreement about payment for the use of his artwork. The situation has not yet been resolved; both parties have been in discussion but an agreement has not yet been reached.
