Apostasy in Islam (Arabic: riddah or irtidād) is commonly defined as the conscious abandonment of Islam by a Muslim in word or through deed. The definition of apostasy from Islam, and whether and how it should be punished are matters of controversy – Islamic scholars differ in their opinions on these questions. The traditional view, which continues to be upheld by the vast majority of Eastern Islamic scholars, is that the punishment for apostasy is death.
