Ancienne Belgique, also known as the AB, was a nightclub in Antwerp, which opened by Renzo Mela (c.1953-2020) and Guy Goezu in February 1985 and closed again in 1989. Resident DJs were Ronny Harmsen and later John Van Looveren, who bought their records at the USA Import. The club was located at the Kipdorpvest, in the center of Antwerp. The 'AB' formed with Boccaccio in Ghent the roots of the Belgian New Beat scene of the late eighties.

Building

The Ancienne Belgique is a Neo-Renaissance building located at the Kipdorpvest 26, built in 1902 as Brasserie-concert Oud België designed by architect Frans Van Dijk.

Set list

The following is a list of records commonly played at the Ancienne Belgique. Most of these records date from 1985, the year the club opened. Often these records are bizarre b-sides and offer a leftfield taste in music. Many of these records were also played on the Liaisons Dangereuses radio show. The list is based on[1]. There is a preference for world music and what was later to be known as new wave and no wave music, all with a low BPM. Many of these records are still played today on the Balearic beat scene.
