Adam and Eve[1] is an etching by Rembrandt depicting Adam and Eve, who are portrayed rather unappetizingly as a middle aged couple, departing from the tradition of the paradisical couple in the prime of their youth. Many contemporary critics disliked the realism of Rembrandt vehemently, especially in his female nudes. The mediocre Dutch poet Andries Pels in The Use and Abuse of the Stage snipped about the "flabby breasts, distorted hands ... and the marks of the garters about the legs." (tr. Frederick Wedmore)
