Abnormality refers to the state or quality of being abnormal, a variation, an irregularity
It is a subjectively defined characteristic, assigned to those with rare or dysfunctional conditions. Defining who is normal or abnormal is a contentious issue in abnormal psychology.
Abnormality litterally refers to any deviation from the normal, the noun form of the adjective abnormal. More specifically, this could mean:
- Abnormality (behavior), behavior deviating from the normal or typical
- Gait abnormality, deviation from normal walking (gait)
- Congenital abnormality, condition which is present at the time of birth which varies from the standard presentation
- Models of abnormality, general hypotheses as to the nature of psychological abnormalities
[edit]
Etymology
A replacement for the earlier anormal French anormal, Late Latin anormalus for anomalus, Greek. Confused with Latin abnormis. See anomalous.
