The roman-charogne is a French literary genre of the 19th century.
Of it Théophile Gautier wrote in 1834, in the preface to Mademoiselle de Maupin : "À côté du roman moyen âge verdissait le roman-charogne, genre de roman très agréable, et dont les petites-maîtresses nerveuses et les cuisinières blasées faisaient une très grande consommation."
