Retinal art said to have been originated by Marcel Duchamp, referring to art whose appeal is mainly or exclusively to the eye rather than to the mind.

As of 2013, it is difficult to trace who exactly coined the phrase retinal art.

The closest thing to be found is an interview from 1946 in which Duchamp states:

“I was interested in ideas – not merely in visual products, I wanted to put painting once again at the service of the mind.”
