This article covers sexual acts in public or semi-public places. Social views related to sex and sexuality vary greatly between different cultures and different times. The term is increasingly used to describe an act taking place outside the bounds of a private residence, regardless of whether it be strictly public (e.g. a toilet, cubicle, or cemeteries).

For many people, public sex involves a "quickie", or sex performed in a short amount of time. However, some situations allow for more lengthy intercourse. In relatively unpopulated areas, at nighttime when visibility is reduced, or when the weather is less than ideal, public sex acts can go on far longer. These situations may also allow for more public display, heightening the thrill for the performers.
