Porcelain is a hard, white, translucent ceramic that is made by firing kaolin and other materials; china.
Porcelain derives from the French word porcelaine, which is a translation of porcellana. Porcellana was first coined by either the Italians or the Portuguese to describe the ceramics being imported from China. Porcellana in Italian originally meant the seashell concha veneris. It is thought to be named after a sea shell due its similar white color and texture.
