The roughie was an American filmgenre best exemplified by Scum of the Earth, a 1963 American exploitation film by David Friedman and Herschell Gordon Lewis. Other filmmakers working in the genre were Joseph Mawra.
Roughies supplanted by "nudie cuties " and commonly featured male violence against women, including kidnapping, rape and murder. Lorna (1964) by Russ Meyer is widely considered to be the first roughie.
