Jean-Léon Gérôme (May 11, 1824 – January 10, 1904) was a French academic painter and sculptor who resisted the counter-revolutionary movements of Impressionism begun by Monet and Manet, continuing the development and conservation of French neo-classicism. He produced many works in a historical, Orientalist style, bringing the French Empire tradition to an artistic climax.
