Insemination is the introduction of sperm into the female uterus of a mammal or the oviduct of an oviparous (egg-laying). Insemination normally takes place during, and as the result of, sexual intercourse between a male and a female when semen is ejaculated by the male into the female's reproductive tract. Artificial insemination is when insemination is done by means other than copulation and is specifically carried out with the intention of impregnating the female.

Insemination which takes place through sexual intercourse is known as natural insemination or NI. This term often refers to where a sperm donor has sexual intercourse with a woman who is not the donor's usual sexual partner, for the sole purpose of achieving a pregnancy in the woman.
