Dolores (or Delores) is a given name, cognate with the English word "dolorous" (meaning sorrowful). In Spanish, where it is more prevalent, it is short for La Virgen María de los Dolores, "Virgin Mary of Sorrows", and is often shortened to the more colloquial forms Lola, Lolita or Loli.
