"La pataphysique est la science des solutions imaginaires" is the definition of 'Pataphysics by its inventor Alfred Jarry in the play Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, pataphysician (II, viii). The phrase is preceded by "DÉFINITON:".
Its English translation is "DEFINITION: the science of imaginary solutions" and can be found as far as 1934 in Modern Thought and Literature in France by Régis Michaud.
