Fernando Pessoa (1888 — 1935) was a Portuguese writer.
Critic Harold Bloom referred to him in the book The Western Canon as the most representative poet of the twentieth century, along with Pablo Neruda.
Known for his use of heteronyms in his writing, the rediscovery in the 1990s of Pessoa is reminiscent of the rediscovery of Kafka in the 1950s.
Like Kafka, Pessoa left his work in disarray, much of it to be published posthumously.
