- 1719 - Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is published.
- 1792 – Highwayman Nicolas Jacques Pelletier becomes the first person executed by guillotine.
- 1792 – La Marseillaise (French national anthem) is composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle.
- 1874 - The word impressionniste was coined in The Exhibition of the Impressionists, a 25 April 1874 article by Louis Leroy which stated that "Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape."
