In 1952, Éric Losfeld founds Éditions Arcanes, a wink to Arcane 17 by André Breton. Losfeld published Xavier Forneret, the first theatrical pieces of Ionesco, re-issued Sade and Sacher-Masoch and launches himself in the in the mail order sale of erotic or pornographic works.

After a few run-ins with the justice department, he founds in 1955 his publishing imprint Éditions Le Terrain vague, which prints the books of Benjamin Péret, Marcel Duchamp and Boris Vian, erotic fiction such as Emmanuelle (1962), works on cinema and graphic novels.
